PSI typically covers three categories: hazards of the chemicals involved (toxicity, reactivity, flammability, corrosivity data), technology of the process (block flow diagrams, process chemistry, maximum intended inventory), and equipment design (P&IDs, relief system design basis, electrical classification).

Every subsequent hazard analysis study — HAZOP, LOPA, QRA — draws directly on PSI as its factual foundation; inaccurate or outdated PSI, such as a P&ID that no longer reflects field-installed equipment, can silently undermine the validity of any study built on top of it.

Keeping PSI current is a management of change responsibility as much as a documentation task: every approved change should trigger an update to the relevant PSI documents, not just the physical or procedural change itself.

Because PSI in a multi-product facility may need to describe multiple chemistries sharing the same equipment, maintaining accurate, product-specific PSI is more demanding than in a dedicated single-product plant, and gaps here are a common root cause when hazard studies later prove to be based on stale information.
